Breakthrough: New Technique Detects Microplastics in Human Body Without Damage (2025)

The world is drowning in microplastics, yet we're blind to their health impact. But a team of researchers from MedUni Vienna has just unveiled a revolutionary technique to pinpoint these tiny invaders in our bodies without harming a single cell. And this is where it gets exciting: their method, OPTIR, is like a non-invasive detective, revealing the exact hiding spots of microplastics within our tissues.

The challenge? Microplastics are notoriously difficult to detect without destroying the very tissue we want to study. But OPTIR, short for Optical Photothermal Infrared Spectroscopy, changes the game. It uses infrared laser light to heat samples, causing plastics to react based on their unique chemical makeup. This reaction is then captured, creating an 'infrared fingerprint' for precise identification.

Here's the breakthrough: the team successfully applied OPTIR to FFPE samples, the standard tissue type in clinical pathology. This means the tissue's structure remains intact, allowing scientists to directly link microplastics with tissue changes. No more guessing games!

In a recent study, they identified microplastics in human colon tissue, with a surprising concentration in areas of inflammation. Even particles as small as 250 nanometres were detectable, which is no small feat!

But the implications are huge. With this technique, we can finally start to understand the mysterious link between microplastics and chronic diseases. Controversially, could this mean we've been living with a silent health crisis?
