A major water main burst has occurred in Cork city, affecting homes and businesses on the southside. Uisce Éireann crews are on the scene, working tirelessly to restore water supply.
The burst has impacted several areas, including Blackrock Road, Boreenmanna Road, and Ballinlough Road. Uisce Éireann, formerly Irish Water, has dispatched expert crews to assess and repair the damage. Operations Manager James Goulding assures customers that every effort is being made to resolve the issue swiftly.
But here's where it gets controversial... During and after such incidents, increased reports of discoloured water are common due to sediment dislodging from old cast iron pipes. Uisce Éireann provides guidance on how to address this issue, recommending running the cold kitchen tap for a few minutes to restore clear water.
Once repairs are complete, if discolouration persists, customers are advised to contact the customer care team or report it online. Vulnerable customers registered with Uisce Éireann receive direct communications for planned and unplanned outages lasting over four hours.
In recent weeks, Uisce Éireann teams have been actively replacing old pipes in Cork city, with significant progress made in the College Road area near University College Cork. Additionally, a €7.3m investment in improved water treatment on the northside is expected to be completed by early 2027.
